Waterproofing Basement Floor

There are a few reasons you might be interesting in waterproofing your basement floor. Either you just purchased your home and are concerned about potential water damage or you have owned your home and noticed that you have cracks in the floor that have or may lead to your basement flooding. Either way, this is a serious matter and needs to be tended to quickly. Don’t mess around any longer with the decision because the longer you wait the worst the potential damage could be.

Reasons Basement Floors Need Waterproofing

There are basically three reasons waterproofing basement floors become necessary. All of them lead to the same problem, cracks in the floor, and a need for the same solution. Someone has to fix them.

1) Poor workmanship – When your home was built and the basement was installed, there might have been poor quality put into the creation that over time has lead to the cracks in your floor. Every construction worker is not created equal and neither is every home and basement as a result.

2) Home Settling – Over the years, houses move on the ground the foundation was built and the home settles into different locations. This is natural, so don’t worry about it. However, this settling does cause ripples in the concrete, drywall, and floors of the property. These ripples tent to lead to cracks that could be developing in your basement floor. Although these cracks are natural, sometimes many of them are too big and too deep to ignore and water will seep into your home.

3) Water pressure – Your basement sits on top of and next too the earth, dirt. The earth has a tendency to retain water and sometimes this water can build up and apply pressure on to your basement walls and floors causing them to crack and buckle. In an event like this, basement waterproofing is necessary and that is what we are going to talk about.

The bottom line when we are talking about waterproofing your basement floors is the fact that you recognize the need, see it as an investment rather than a cost, and move into action to get it done. Don’t delay cause everyday you wait is a day that potential disaster could strike and flooding happens. It is no fun going back to do something like waterproofing basement floor when you should have done it in the first place.
